Why is the Government relentlessly pursuing a retired social worker on the charge of contempt of court? Trudi and the lawyer dedicated to holding power accountable for oppressive measures share the story behind the headlines in an exclusive online event hosted by Page75 Productions and Good Law Project.
Trudi Warner is a retired social worker from Walthamstow. Last year she was arrested on charges of contempt of court for holding a placard outside court telling jurors they were entitled to find environmental defenders not guilty based on their conscience. That message is based on a plaque which can be found on a wall inside the Old Bailey. Despite this Trudi was summoned to The Old Bailey, the High Court where they try serious criminal cases, and is facing a sentence of up to two years in prison.
The judge threw the case out calling it ‘fanciful’. 22 days later the Government appealed.
For the past 18 months Page75 Productions has been documenting Trudi’s story, following a non-violent civil resistance group that is demanding the UK government stop licensing new oil and gas projects in the face of the climate emergency.
During this time the government clamped down on their rights to peaceful protest, silenced them in court and imposed disproportionately harsh prison sentences for some. Page75 film director Liz Smith was also arrested under the new police powers just for filming climate protesters.
So what are the changes the government has made to these laws? Why has there been such a disproportionate response from The Government? What is it that the Government has seen fit to appeal the Judge’s ruling?
Trudi’s battle is not over.
Join Trudi, Good Law Project and Page75 Productions to understand the path to today and what this mean for all British citizens in the future.
